 2006 530xi

Well yesterday was my first time REALLY testing the XI ability in snow and I have to admit ice. I was not impressed at all. The car was really sliding around quite a bit. I do have the RF 18'' low profiles which may have something to do with it. Also, I admit that being new to the BMW world, I did not have the DTC button activated, not sure if that makes a difference. I was under the impression that the car would automatically kick into all wheel drive if it detected slippage in the back tires.

Any help here would really help. I LOVE my car but I was little let down yesterday and of course now I feel like I spent the extra money on the XI for no reason.

Thanks.

It's all about the tires, repeat it is all about the tires. RF tires are "performance" tires and as with other such rated tires will quickly lose traction in the cold, regardles of how many wheel drive you have. The solution is to fit a set of "winter" tires, then you will have the maximum traction, turning and stopping capabilities within the design parameters of the car. To start, click the link you inserted and review the section on winter driving and tires. For easy seasonal change-over you may want to get a set of dedicated wheels for your winter set-up.

I thought it might be that. Thanks for the response. I would imagine that I wouldn't need to have another set of rims, correct? I could just add a winter tire to my existing rims, correct? Of course, this would then require a dealer visit $$$$

Thanks

I have a 06 Xi w/o run flat tires or performance tires and I thought it handled great in the snowstorm we had here in PA last week. I didn't slip once or at any time feel like I was not in control. I had a 325Xi prior and I see a big improvement in the snow with the 530Xi. It's gotta be your tires.

I'd really consider a different set of rims for you winter tires if I were you. You want a 'skinnier' tire for the winter. Plus, if you have runflats, you're pretty much locked into your current setup.

To reinforce what others said, no awd system is going to make up for the wrong tires for the wrong conditions. In fact, my 545i with winter tires is probably going to perform better under most winter conditiions than your X-drive with summer tires.

Looks like an automatic hyperlink anytime we post with the word tires. Tires works but not tire. Also winter tires works. How about summer tires (I'll soon find out!). Or race tires, low profile tires, run flat tires, m&s tires, tires tires tires tire tires (hahahah).

I'll be taking mine to Mammoth next week, and let you know how it handles the slippery stuff up there. Do not have the 18's.
