Hi everyone,

I'm just about to order a 2007 530i, and I'm trying to decide whether to go for SMG or not. I'm coming from a 2000 323i with Steptronic, of which the manual mode is not at all impressive. I've driven stick before on rental/loaner cars, but all my personal cars have been automatic. I know the SMG system circa 2004 had a pretty rough automatic mode, and I was just wondering if anyone knows if this has improved since then?

I don't mind something that's not automatic transmission smooth, but probably 50% I'm going to be using the automatic mode, and don't want something extra rough.

Anyone got an opinions on the pros/cons of SMG?

In the 530i it should be even better. It takes about 30 days or more to learn to drive it smoothly, but once you get it, your passengers will think you're driving an automatic transmission in auto mode if you want them to. On the other hand, if you want them to think you're driving a manual transmission in auto mode, that's easy to do to. It's all in how you apply the throttle. I'm in a small minority, but I use auto mode virtually all the time. I just find it easier and more fun to control the shifting with my right foot than with my right hand or fingertips. And, if you floor it in auto mode, it instantaneously downshifts two gears and takes off like a rocketship. I just hit two years and 30,000 miles and can't stop smiling, and this is after driving a stick shift for 38 of 40 years.
