 Disturbing news re: purchase

Over on another forum, a guy bought a Porsche from a Texas authorized Porsche dealer, sight unseen, tho pics were provided and the car was described as basically perfect. A car fax check turned up no problems. This fellow deals with Porsche a lot and figured a dealer would be trustworthy.

Actually, the car had been in a front-ender and had been traded in while in a non-Porsche bodyshop. In short, the car inside and out really was a piece of junk. Maybe a 5 of 10.

Several others also said they had their vehicles checked by car fax and came back clean... tho they had been in accidents.

This deal will cost the guy dearly. It was a "as is" deal. Now he needs a Texas lawyer and has to fly two expert witnesses from Pennsylvania and go thru a whole court battle.

Beware! is all I can say.

Yet everyone relies on car fax. What gives?

Not all collisions are discoverable.

Buying a used car unseen is not the smartest idea regardless of the type of vehicle.

Yeah, a few months after the "incident" with my M Coupe at Vista, I checked the Carfax. It came up 100% clean. Checked it a year later, same thing. I'm guessing it's because the repairs were paid out of the dealership's pockets, not insurance. And it happened on their lot, so no police report (even though they were called out).

If you notice, they only guarantee that REPORTED accidents/damage will show up on the report, not that there never WAS an accident with the car. If someone has a fender bender and pays for it out of pocket, it's not gonna show up.

I don't see how he thinks he has a case against the dealer. Nothing illegal about selling a car with bodywork. If it had frame damage that only has to be disclosed in certain states. He bought the car AS-IS, he's an owner.

doesn't Carfax have a warranty policy for these kind of things?
That said, I don't see how Carfax can know of every incident, regardless of what they claim.
