 "double clutching" the Steptronic

OK, some what misleading title - but I'm interested in people's experience getting the step to agressively downshift in M mode. (I know, shoulda bought the manual)....

I read about downshifting through multiple gears, then HOLDING the shift lever while the car 'get around' to reaching your selected gear. OK, thats better than nothing.

But I've found that 'blipping' the throttle once I've selected and held "2" for example helps force the tranny to shift eariler, and therefore closer to the higher RPM just as I would do if I had a manual (shoulda bought the manual, I know...)

Anybody got any ideas on how to get agressive downshifts out of the step? Especially interested in hearing from anybody that has had their E60 out on the track and learned how to get maximum performance on downshifting. Thanks -steve-

You have an AT. "blipping" or rev matching the throttle only works with a clutch. Steps are fun and you can use them for engine braking but the feeling you are looking for can only be had by a manual and possibly SMG.

I understand that. Given that I have a Step (shoulda' bought a manual), my question is about technique that maximizes the downshifting experience with step.

My experiments indicate that blipping the throttle (e.g. not dissimilar to rev matching via double clutching a manual) 'forces' the step to downsift at a higher RPM that just waiting for it to decided to downshift.

Looking for any suggestions from those that played with their steptronic on the track or learned from BMW instructors how to get the best downshifts possible. -steve-

You’re never going to get that good downshift you want. I pretty much have only driven in the "Manual" Steptronic mode in my car and the only gear that you get the pull you are looking for is going from 3rd to 2nd and you need to be going more than 30 + mph to even feel it. That switch feels the most powerful. The plus side is quick downshifts on the highway without ever taking your foot off the gas. Try going 60mph in 5th and flooring your ride while simultaneously downshifting Two times into 3rd gear, you will pull with many of the fastest cars out there and beat most. Be sure to have the DCS OFF for max performance.

Thanks Chi-Town Racer. I agree with the 3-2 downshift being the best shot. Also appreciate the 5-4-3 downshift without lifing the throttle. Will give that a try and see how it works for me. -steve-

Isn't your 550i quick enough already?

Are you asking for stoplight contests or highway passing?
