 530i vs Audi a6

I'm looking for a new car and have narrowed it down to 530 or Audi A6

BMW edges out on Ride, Performance

Equal on exterior styling

Audi has edge on interior styling ( big edge )

Audi MMI seems to blow away IDrive system as far as ease of use.

Could anybody comment on plus and minuses of IDrive?

Thank you!

I think that iDrive is a good way to control some lesser-used functions, but after using it daily for ~10 months I don't think it's a very efficient way to control the radio. Switching from a Sirius channel to an AM channel, for example, takes a lot longer (or at least it feels that way) than if the radio had "old-fashioned buttons." I've never used the Audi system, so I have no idea how they compare, however.

I am a long time Audi driver who just made the switch to BMW. I was also nervous about the I-Drive, especially with all the bad press it gets. A 30 minute test drive is not enough time to learn the system.

I've put about 4000 (trouble free) miles on my car so far, and I absolutely LOVE the I-Drive!!!!!

Although I agree the Audi interior is beautiful, the 530 has definitely grown on me over a few months. I really like the austere and uncluttered dash and find the car very relaxing to be in. There are no distracting lights and buttons all over the place.

As for operating the system, I think its very easy. The controller is perfectly placed and you don't ever need to reach or look for lots of tiny buttons. Most audio functions can be controlled by the buttons on the steering wheel. The menu structure of the system is also quite simple - so once you know where everything is, it becomes automatic to find things. There are also some short cuts to move around that save a few steps.

I drove my wife's car last weekend for a trip and really missed the I-Drive!

Another thing to consider about Audi is that their "free" maintenance no longer covers wear items like brakes/rotors/wiper blades etc. And for me - the deal breaker was no manual shift!

Good luck with whatever decision you make!

I test drove a lot of cars before deciding on the 530xi (I'm waiting for MY07 to start so I can order one). I chose the 530xi over the Audi for several reasons: Much better ride and handling, quieter, more seat options (I'll get the comfort seats). In fact I liked the Ininiti M35AWD over the A6 Quattro.

Everyone complains about the iDrive but almost every post on the iDrive by owners after they've had it for a while praises it. You'll get used to the controls. I don't have any concerns about learning and using the iDrive - it makes for a much cleaner interior. However, I may have to give my wife several lessons.

I would definitely agree - coming off my '03 E320, I was very tentative about the I-drive, especially with all the bad press. My test drives of the 530 were not long enough to get a good feel for the I-drive - and in fact because I didn't get a good feel for it I came away thinking that the bad press may be right. However, for all the other reasons (looks, performance, etc.) I opted to go with the 530xi - and it was absolutely the right decision. After about a day or so with the I-drive I couldn't believe how easy it is to use - I really like it! Plus, every time I find something that I don't like, there seems to be a post on this board that let's me know I've just missed something (I still haven't read the owner's manual like I should!).

So, my advice would be to go with the 530 if you like it - the I-drive is definitely not a reason to look elsewhere!
