I have a 2005 545i and the iDrive has been giving me a tremendous amount of problems from the getco. All the issues seem to be the same as those identified in earlier 7-series. Please post any problems you have had so I can collect some data. The iDrive problems I have experienced include warnings such as "Fatal System Error - Do Not Attempt To Drive - Contact Your BMW Service....." and "System Error .....". The iDrive will also randomly go blank and shut of components managed by the iDrive system such as A/C, CD Player, Radio, Voice Commands, Phone (Bluetooth) etc.

You should still be under warranty...take it to the dealer for a software refresh as that is most likely what they will do. My I-Drive has worked flawlessly on my 545i. Good Luck!

In the year I've had my 545i, iDrive has been flawless, except for one time when it froze. I pressed mute/cd eject/dvd eject for a few seconds until it turned on, and haven't had a problem since.

I really dont know what kind of "data" you think you need to collect. Have you brought the car in for warranty service for these issues? What did they do? It's a software and/or hardware problem. The s.o.p I'm pretty sure will be for the dealer to attempt an upgrade to the latest software version, and if they have problems getting it to load and run, they will look to the various hardware modules.
Ive had no problems on my 2005 545i other than one system freeze; I couldnt remember the "ctrl-alt-del" sequence so I just re-started the car. I did get the first ver. 20 upgrade however in partial response to a transmission shift issue for which there was a bulliten. That fixed the transmission issue and gave me more bells and whistles in iDrive such as perspective view in Nav and the 'new' Nav menu to the left of the map display. It also gave me RDS radio functionality (didnt have that before) but it can be screwy and needs attention at some point.

No problems here either. Is mute/cd eject/dvd eject the equivalent of ctl-alt-del?
