An article in the new issue of Roundel mentioned that the tailgate of the 530xiT has a soft-close feature. When mine closes, it really slams shut. Before I say anything to my dealer, I was wondering whether everyone else's slams or closes softly. Thanks.

Mine closes pretty softly with the automatic.
However, I find that the OEM mat I bought for the back sometimes slips a little and inteferes with the closing of the tailgate.

If you push the button, it closes itself (at least the loaner I played with worked that way). There is also an iDrive setting to determine how far the tailgate will open.

I think soft close means that if the tailgate encounters an obstruction (like your finger) it will open up again. I'm not going to test that.
