I like the 530, but don't need the all wheel drive in Southern California.

Exactly....
I would even consider a 330iT, but a 530iT would be nice. I do not want AWD and must have a manual tranny...

Maddy | There you go - factory fresh . (See attached.) You need to lobby your local dealer to import it. Performance is quite a bit better, particularly in economy, vs the X5 3.0i although some of that is due to the newer engine of course. I'm sure there's plenty of demand for a non-4WD 5-door in those States which don't routinely have deep winter snow.

i bought the AWD since i really wanted the wagon body style and added convenience. my sense is that the wagon is not a big enough seller for bmw to justify bringing in the RWD. my dealer told me that in his opinion wagons only makes sense in awd and two door cars only make sense as convertibles. i dont know if i agree with him. i think there is so much emphasis on suvs by manufacturers and consumers that for a wagon to compete it has to at least me offered with awd. i live in portland oregon where it is more about teh rain than it is snow or ice. i dont know what i would have chosen had the x-drive been an option. it has been very nice the few times i have needed it. i dont particularly notice any handling sacrifice, although i am not a hard core sport driver. i love the car. ed june 24th 05.

Totally agree!
XDrive should be an option just like in the sedan (sort of). Consumers should be given a choice.
For those who want AWD, there's the X3 and X5. Wagons are more like cars/sedans so customers should also be given a choice of i, or ix.
