lexus ls460: 4.6ltr. 380hp/370ft-lbs
bmw 550: 4.8ltr. 360hp/360ft-lbs

why are bmw v8s lagging so far in specific output as in the example above and even compared to their own 6 cylinder engines(e.g. 330 3.0ltr. with 258hp), is it just timing until the next upgrades? granted the full torque graph in the above example MIGHT mitigate the apparent disparity but 75hp/ltr, even for a luxury car, seems a bit stale, imo.

i know, i'm expecting that response, not to say that it may not be valid.

Toyota utilizes so called 'direct injection' in which gas is injected directly into combustion chamber instead of through intake manifolds. This both save gas and increase power output. In other words, high effiency. If BMW implements DI, it'll outpower Toyota 4.6L engine by at least 10hp.

true the lexus engine has DI but the bmw 6cyl doesn't, numerous engines in mainstream applications are making >80hp/ltr if not close to 90.

The new Lexus is not out yet. The current 4.3 litre has only 276hp. BMW 4.4 litre has 325hp. For comparison MB 5.0 litre was only 302hp, the upcoming 5.5 will have 380hp. Newer engines are usually more effective. Next generation of BMW engines will catch up with Lexus and as already mention "german horses are bigger".
