Being able to read/send SMS's from iDrive I think depends on the model of your cell phone. With my Motorola V600 I am unable to send/read sms messages from iDrive. The coolest thing is that the car will automatically pair with your phone after you set it up the first time, so you never even have to think about it.

I have a Verizon LG VX8100 and it works well after paired. Verizon cripples their bluetooth so that you can't SMS or do anything really cool, but as a phone, it works. You can use voice dial and store names in the BMW voice control, then it will dial your phone. You can answer incoming calls with iDrive too. Once paired, as long as you keep bluetooth on, on your phone, your car will pair with it every time you turn on your car. One other nice thing is that if you are talking on your phone while walking up to the car, then you start the car, the car will take over your conversation on to the speakerphone.

Except it charges in the cradle and requires it to be in the craddle versus the wireless Bluetooth. Check with your dealer to be certain.

Do you need to have navigation in order to pair a cell phone with the car? From what I've gathered, there already is a bluetooth module installed in the car for BMW assist. So to pair up a phone, I would need to have the cell phone feature essentially "turned on".

Your phone must be bluetooth compliant and the feature must be turned on.
