 Brake Squeak?

Hi, everyone! I hope you can help me out with this problem. So, a few days ago, I got winter tires (on steel wheels) installed (finally!) on my E60. Now, occasionally, when I am backing up, I hear this really horrendous and very loud squeaking (it sounds like old worn out brakes!). I'm not sure what is going on because it isn't predictable - sometimes it squeaks and sometimes it doesn't. Would anyone here know what is going on? Is it just the newly mounted wheels "breaking in" or something? I've never had something like this happen before and find it extremely troubling. Thanks for your help!

cheers,
suntan

P.S. I got the tires (Blizzaks) and wheels (ASA) from Tirerack (their recommended package for the E60), and had them installed at my BMW dealership.

Wheels don't 'break in.' I was thinking that the installer could have over-torqued the bolts and warped your brake rotors, but that would be unlikely (but not impossible) at a dealership. Just bring it back to the dealership asap!

Normal.

This happens to me, esp after washing. This also happens to my Mini, with 1967 technology, on the front brakes.

Slight corrosion on the pad/disk surface is rubbing off and setting up a resonance as you back up at low speed. When you pull away and apply the brakes first time going forward, it works itself off.

It wasnt clear to me whether he hears this when backing up while applying the brakes, or without applying the brakes.

Yes, a little bit of noise the first time you apply the brakes, especially after the car has sat for a day or more, is very normal. It can even be kinda loud.

Hi! Thanks so much for the responses! Yes, I was applying the brakes (I was going downhill); it was extremely loud - like a loud whine. I took it to the dealer and they couldn't find anything wrong; probably brake rust, I guess.

cheers,
suntan

I had this same problem only when backing out of my garage, and no it wasn't my fender on the side of the garage. The dealer didn't hear it the first time, so I showed the advisor when i placed it in reverse it did indeed make the noise. The tech isolated it to be the brake pad sensor, so they machined them downa little to prevent them from rubbing. There was plenty of pad left. I have about 25,000 miles on them.
