 Japanese Import

I have a 2004 build BMW530i I imported from Japan. My local dealer tells me that neither the phone (it has a japan spec kit in it) nor the navigation (DVD ROM in the boot) will work outside Japan. Has anybody got any bright ideas?

I know Japan uses a wireless phone system that doesn't work anywhere else in the world, so your dealer is probably right on that. I think the DVD navigation should work for you however. Our US spec cars will accept a navigation DVD for Europe with no problem......but I've never heard of the DVD rom drive being in the boot, ours is in the dash, so your situation could be unique. Good luck!!!

You probably are out of luck with the cellular kit in that car. If it is DoCoMo i-mode, that is pretty much Japan-only. They were licensing the technology to other parts of the world, but I don't know of any systems running outside of the home islands (I haven't checked in a while though, but I think that is still true.) Even if the phone kit was GSM, it is probably GSM 3G and I think New Zealand is still GSM 900.

I think I remember reading somewhere that either BMW installs a different nav for Japan or there are a lot of aftermarket installations. The Japanese are much more advanced on what they want for nav; they have some really cool 3D nav systems that show the buildings in urban areas.
