Does the 5 series countdown to next service?

What does the service window in the iDrive supposed to do? When I click onto it, it lists oil check, brakes, etc., but always has the same mileage. There is no countdown to the next service, etc. (ie. the oil change lists 15000 miles, which it has since I bought the car. It still lists 15000, and there is over 16,000 mile on the car now.) The dealer says that's ok - that the car will let them know if there's a problem. Is that right?
I'm sorry this is a simple question, but this is my first BMW. Otherwise, the car's great!

Sounds like your car needs an oil change, see post number 5 below...

How long have you owned the car? You also should get a "free" oil change after 1 year.

When you first turn on the key, the mileage displayed on the odometer is the mileage to next service.

Mine wasn't counting down properly either, and at 15,000 the dealer just did the maintenance anyway. Once the service department properly understands your issue, you should not have a problem getting the oil service at ~15,000 miles.

I *think* there is a TSB out there for 545's that don't count properly to the next service.

Quoting from the manual:

The remaining travel distance and the date for the next maintenance are briefly displayed when the ignition key is in position 2.

Your BMW Service Adviser can determine your vehicles current service requirements by reading out the data stored on the master key.

I "think" I remember there being a software issue that caused this and was fixed in a CIP release (somwher between v15 and v19). I "think" my car used to display "15000" until I got a software upgrade to CIP 19.01 in October, it's been counting down normally as expected now and I should hit my first indicated service at 13,600 mile total mileage.
