530 vs. 540
I'm thinking a purchasing a used 5 series BMW. I'm debating between a 530 and a 540, but have heard that the 530 engine, although less powerful, is better choice. Does anyone have any words of advice in this regard?

Does anyone have any words of advice in this regard? | I am assuming you are looking at it in terms of E60 vs. E39, as I don't know if they sell an E60 540i in Canada. In terms of engine, the V8 would have more torque, but the I6 would get better consumption. Otherwise its hard to say without knowing more details about the car.

For the E39s the I6s were more reliable than the V8s.
Fuel consumption will be more on a V8 but not much more if you are primarly driving on highways. If you are looking at E60 530 vs 545/550, you need to drive the cars and figure out your priorities. Is reliability an issue at all (leasing under warranty)? Is fuel consumption an issue? Do you need the extra torque of the V8? FWIW, the 2006 525 is just 10hps less than the 2005 530!. Though extra power never hurt anyone, the best part of the BMW experience is the handling, not raw power.

Thanks for your reply. I'm actually looking at the E39 model. I've heard the BMW is more renowned for they're straight 6 engine than their V8 engine. I'm also hearing that the 530 series has rack and pinion steering, which seems more compelling. I think I'm leaning towards the E39 530.

Thanks so much for you reply. After a few inquiries, it seems the E39 530 is mre popular, particularly with reqards to handling. I've seen a few complaints about the balance of the 540 because of the weight of the motor. I have no need for a V8 per se, I thought long term reliability might be better, but that doesn't seem to be the case.
