Mine seems to do that sometimes too, I think it is programmed to turn on for very low light... I just turn the switch to off during the day

Quote: | mine is on all the time in bright day light... | It's worth noting that the sensor is sensitive to infrared, not visible light. This is in addition to the fact that the threshold to turn the lights off is greater than that to turn them on, meaning the light levels must be higher to cause the lights to be turned off than it was to turn them on in the first place. What difference does being sensitive to infrared make? Well it means that in conditions of light overcast or clear sky in the winter time that the lights will come on sooner and tend to stay on longer than you might expect. The sensor is staring upwards and I suspect it has a rather narrow field of view as well so it sees a relatively small section of the sky. Combine the sky conditions with low sun angles during the winter and this behavior of the auto headlights is expected, even documented by BMW. The sensitivity or thresholds can be adjusted by the dealer so making the system turn on and back off at lower light levels might work for winter but you might run into a problem where the system waits too long (it's too dark) in the summer (remember it's sensitive to infrared, not visible light). Nonetheless there are three setting levels, I assume to compensate between northern lattitudes and the tropics. Our cars are on the middle setting as far as I know.
