I just bought a new 2005 545i. Its awesome in everyway, except it did not come equipped with navigation. Is there a way for me to have the dealer add this for a reasonable price?

when you compare the cost, the garmin is the best deal and goes from car to car.
if you want the HUD you need to get the nav it make the point mute, you have no choise weather it good or bad. | POIs are a fairly minor feature (and BTW they can be made to flood the screen). Try using your Garmin inside a tunnel or even downtown area with high buildings (e.g. downtown Manhattan). The BMW system has zero startup time (the Garmin's do not) and it comes with a full set of U.S. maps.

Software update (unit software, not maps) is simple, no need to schedule a trip to the dealer. You'll also benifit from the portability between vehicles. Plus if it breaks, you send it back to the company you bought it from, meantime you can still drive your car. If you don't like the quality of the maps, then you can resell and pick another Nav vendor. (IMO there are none out there quite as good (detailed, well rendered, accurate) as the Garmin or TomTom units, my personal favorite would be the Nuvi350 $899, if I could afford it)
With pre-installed, you git what you git.
I would say also that having I-Drive/Nav reduces the resaleability of your car (in the sense that not many people actually want this option)
