The MPG gauge on my 04' 530 swings back and forth on my daily drive. Is that normal?? The gauge does not stay constant, but will swing wildly from a reading of 12mpg to 50mpg and vice versa. My OBC gives me a reading of 19 MPG. I don't pay attention to that MPG gauge anymore, cuz I'm not sure if it's working correctly. Does anyone have the same problem? Do I need to take it to the dealer? thanks. |

Mine swings as well - I assume it's my driving habits. Starting from a stop and heading up a hill, the gauge drops significantly - which makes sense to me in that I have a heavy foot from a stop and must be getting pretty lousy mileage when I push it and at the same time head uphill. Also, when I take my foot off the gas the gauge swings up - which again makes sense seeing how I'm not using much gas so the milage should be better. At constant speeds the gauge is pretty constant, again making sense!
Most of my 1,000 miles so far has been back and forth to work (city driving through West Roxbury, Brookline and Chestnut Hill/Newton) and I'm averaging about 17.5 MPG on that trip. Certainly not great (the E320 was around 25 MPG on the same trip), but then again it's only 20 miles (40/day) so I'm not breaking the bank!!

This is strange considering I was *just* about to create a post about a similar anomoly I'm seeing.
I noticed the MPG guage swinging over even when I have the car in neutral!
This doesn't happen all the time, but I'm beginning to see it more frequently. I'm trying to determine if it is an instrument problem or an engine issue.
Should I be concerned about this?

The MPG gauge on the dash shows your instantaneous consumption, so that is why it constantly moves back and forth while driving in city traffic. It should be fairly stable when stopped or when driving with cruise control on a flat road.

Quote: | Should I be concerned about this? | Only if you are concerned about fuel consumption in a 4.4 liter V8 that you paid a $1300 gas-guzzler tax on.
The idea of a MPG guage on a car of this sort is laughable.
