how do i know if i have bluetooth installed?
I recently bought a used 04' 530i and am very happy with it. I took my friend for a ride and he pointed out what looks like cellular phone signal bars in the bottom, right-hand corner of the idrive screen. Does this mean I have bluetooth? If not, what do I need to do to get bluetooth installed and how much dough are we talking?! Your help is greatly appreciated as I can not find the neccessary info at bmw.com

If it is not, then you must get it activated. You wll fall into two general categories, cars built beofre Mar 04 and cars built after Mar 04. This is detailed in a Service Information Bulletin issued by BMW.
To quote the SB :
For E60/63/64 vehicles produced from 3/04 to 8/04, Bluetooth***174; functionality can be added to most of these vehicles by updating the vehicle software using CIP 13.2 or higher. After this is performed "Retrofit" of "Tel Bluetooth" needs to be performed. Follow the procedure as described in this Service Information for "Activating Bluetooth" and "Pairing the Handset". Vehicles prior to 3/04 would need to have the TCU replaced with the 2005 MY TCU at the customer's expense and the vehicle updated to CIP 13.2 or higher. Phone docking cradles may not be added to these vehicles because of wiring incompatibility. Note: This software update and retrofit is not covered under warranty and is at the customer's expense.
You will need to have your build date to confirm where you fall into the above. You can find it on the lablel on the driver's side door.
If you simply need a software udate, search the boards for a common complaint to get it done under warranty. BT activation is easy as part of an update.
If you are in the position of having to replace a TCU, it will cost you at least $1500 for the changeover.
