newbie howdy...550 v 530 (again)
Guten Tag!
Was a regular poster way back in the late 90's when roadfly.org was bimmer.org. That place seems dead now so I have been lurking here.
Former BMWs have been '95 318i & '00 540i, both manual trannys. Active member of the vintage BMW motorcycle community and restore vintage bikes as a hobby.
Anywho, I am in the market for der neu 5er and am pondering between a loaded 530 or a 550 with very few options. 6 speed manual, or maybe SMG on the 550 (no cost option). Something like this:
A) 530i, sport, premium, cold weather, split seats, sun shades, nav + hud.
or
B) 550i, sport, cold weather (must haves, IMHO) might have to do euro delivery to get the price point I need for this. Also my BMWCCA rewards does not hurt either ;^)
My '00 540i6 was rated 15-18 mpg which was very UNderrated. I routinely got 18 in town and around 26 hwy cruising 80-90mph. In fact over 36 months the total mpg average was 18.5 which I thought was stellar.
How is the new 550i6? If it is truly 15 in town and 18 hwy then I am not interested as gas in my area tends to be on the high side.
The 530 would have all the fun goodies, like nav & hud, but after the novelty wears off, I probably would not use them that much except for 3-4 car trips per year. For ex, my '03 ML500 has nav and I prob have not used it in 6 months.
The 550 would not have all the fun bits, yet it surely would have the one I could enjoy everyday, a 360hp V8.
TIA for your thoughts!
BTW, for you die-hard BMW & German car fans, you might enjoy the collection of war-time advertising I have put together. Warning LARGE pics:

Best, -Grey in NC http://mullwerks.com | IMHO, if you are used to your 540..... and if you can swing the extra cash... go for the 550.
I have 7700 miles on my 545 and my gas milage seems to be as follows: Highway... around 28 City... hard to say since I haven't really burned an entire tank in city driving. Average.... I'm averaging about 18-19.
I was given a 525 loaner last week while mine was being serviced and I checked the mileage while I had it and really didn't see that much difference in fuel economy.
Go for the gusto my man.

If I set cruise at around 75mph on the highway I can get 32mpg (that's near civic territory). Even around town with a heavy foot I'm yet to see below 20mpg. If you're after mpg then the 530i is your car but the 550i will certainly provide you with more onramp, passing and auditory thrills.
