 windshield wiper smear

My E60 has really quite bad smearing of the windshield when I use the wipers. I've wiped the blades with a cloth (fair amount of black 'dirt' removed) with no improvements; sprayed the washer fluid heavily with no improvement; cleaned the windshield with a strong cleaner with no improvement.....

A search of this forum reveals others with the complaint to some degree or other.

Question: does BMW use inferior quality wiper blades (so free replacement by the dealership won't really solve my problem) or am I experiencing just a bad set of blades?

btw, both sides smear, so both wiper blades exhibit the same problem. Night driving in our famous Portland rain is bordering on unsafe for me until I get this resolved. Any help or ideas would be appreciated! -steve-

sounds like a bad set of blades. The dealer will swap for free. I have them change mine every oil change.

are they smearing or skippin across the glass? I had an e46 that had skipping wipers no mater what I did. In retrospect, it was probably bad springs on the arms, since it persisted with new blades...

I don't have smearing on my E61 yet, but the dealer told me to have them replaced at least once a year, preferably in the spring. Since they're a maintenance item, they'll replace them whenever you complain of smearing, or at least they should.

I think the skipping could be caused by polish on the window, if you might have some on there by accident...

Try rubing the contact point of the wiper blade with a piece of lemon,(make sure you cut the lemon in half and use the inside), and then clean it off with water.Good luck
cheers
