How does the X Drive work in the BMW? Does it give power to the rear wheels until Power is needed by all wheels? How does it compare to Audi's Quatro and Infiniti's AWD?

It works very well.

Nominal torque split is 60/40, with up to 100% to the rear wheels at low speed (parking lots, etc). Up to 100% can be sent to the front wheels if the rear wheels have no traction. There is continuous sensing, and continuous adjustment.

Lots of good info can be found on the various BMW websites, under X drive.

IMO, you should go to Audi and Infinity to see how their systems work, not here.

This is inaccurate. I think you're referring to the Audi Quattro system with regard to the 60/40 front/rear split. I'm no xDrive expert but according to the 530xiT brochure I have (considering for the wife), on dry roads virtually all the power is sent to the rear wheels to maintain the typical BMW handling traits. When slip is detected xDrive transfers power from the rear to the front or side to side - wherever the most traction is available. 100% of the power can be diverted to the rear wheels but my literature doesn't specify how much can be diverted to the front wheels.

Audi has a typical 60/40 torque split though this is changing in the new RS4 where the new split is 40/60 front/rear. Audi has finally admitted that more power to the rear wheels provides better handling balance on dry roads, especially in a sports oriented car.

We don't have any choice with the wagon and given the choice I'm not sure what we'd do. Since this will be the "family" car the versatility of awd is nice for trips to Big Bear and Mammoth in the winter. If we never went to the mountains I would not consider the xi since it adds unnecessary weight, hurts fuel economy (only 2mpg) and cannot be had with the sports package of the rwd car (ARS and lower ride height).

I just returned from Mammoth in my wife's 2wd Benz. CAN'T WAIT for my 530xiT to arrive.

The catalyst for my purchase was Mammoth snow. We're boarders, and it gets old going to the snow with 2wd.

Winter sports are the primary reason for my purchase, but a secondary benefit is overall improved vehicle control in bad weather. California gets it's share of heavy rains, with hydroplaning and mud wreaking havoc on control. I've driven 2wd and 4wd in heavy rains, and believe me you're in MUCH better control with 4WD/AWD. I live in Santa Barbara, so snow is not a home concern. Rain is!
