Hi everyone, Just got my new 530i, what a beauty! Black on black! The sales rep at the dealer ask me if I want to permplate the whole car for $645 (5yr) in north cal, so that I don't have to wax the car and will keep the int. clean. My question is: 1. Should I do that? What is the downside? 2. Is the price good? 3. Is it safe to do? non-toxic? We have kids. 4. What happened after 5 yrs? peeling off? will that be ugly then?
Thanks and happy new year!

No..permaplate does nothing to your car. Stay away! Its a pure dealer profit item.

Yep, although you might consider getting some Xpel (www.xpel.com) or Stoneguard (check ads here).

These "lifetime" and even 5 year protection products are today's snake oil. Total waste of money. The exterior products are basically synthetic polymers (like Zaino or Rejex) and the interior products are similar to Scotchguard. You could buy the products for under $100 and do it yourself--and nothing will last 5 years.

Ditto - I also think its a waste of money.
Since you asked the question - I'll assume you're not familiar with quaility synthetics like Zaino. (There are others - but I happen to use the Zaino products). In my opinion its best to wash your new bimmer yourself - using only high quality products. I usually apply 2 coats of Zaino Z2 (synthetic sealant w/ UV protection) every 6 months. Now my car is always covered - even at work. If yours isn't you may want to do it every 3 or 4 months. No hard rubbing - and wipes off easily. A coat can be applied in 15 minutes. Between coats I spray on/wipe off Zaino Z6. The shine is very deep - and looks better than showroom. Seriously.
Other than that I wash it weekly (or sometimes every other week) and always finish with a layer of Z6. Takes about 45 minutes. The car always keeps a deep, creamy-looking shine.
Initially, I spent a lot of time reading the Detailing forum - and it was very helpful. You might find it helpful too.
Be well.
