Hey guys..I test drive the 550 and 545 earlier and never paid much attention to the exausht sounds on the 550i...how does it sounds on the outside? car is pretty sounds insulated inside so do not expect much...any feedback would be great  |

i've had my 550 for about a month now... when i picked it up, and for the first few weeks i thought it sounded noticably subdued... but just recently my girlfriend and i have been commenting on the deep, almost aggressive note it lets out when starting up... i dont know if its breakin in or if i just hadn't noticed, but its there for sure. don't know what it sounds like outside when you get on it cause winter in NY doesn't really allow for open window drivin, but i'd say if your lookin for something with a really serious exhaust note you'll probably have to go after-market... oh... but i LOVE the car though... truelly... NO COMPLAINTS... yet...

If you watch the third episode "BMW: Birth of a Sports Car", it covers the production phase of the 6 series.
They show what is involved getting the exhaust tuned just right. So for example, on the highway, they balanced the exhaust note with wind noise, road noise, etc.
However, from a stand still, when you punch it, it makes the deep throaty sound. They felt the deep sound is not desirable at all times for most buyers and tuned accordingly.
They also have to meet certain noise emission guidelines.

I saw the Birth of Sports Car 2 days ago and that is what sparked my interest in how 550 sounds like comparing to a 6 series. I'm close to pulling a trigger on ED 550i but also considered a 650 as it is not as common.

Thanks | Both are excellent choices. Just depends if you have to haul more than two passengers around.
If you go with the 550, you can get the M Euro body kit which adds some distinction to the car. Although it's about $3k installed.
