Electronic Malfunction on my 2006 525i

I leased my 2006 525i (premium and sport packages with xeon lights) 2 months ago in San Jose, CA. The car has about 2050 miles on it. And while on my family's trip from San Jose to San Diego after this Thanksgiving, the car suddenly started to have an electronic malfunction on the LA highway: windshield wipers starts to wipe, and all the readings on the instrumentation panel and radio are lost, and windows can not be openned, with a warning message on the display saying something like "electronic malfunction. Driving not possible. Attend nearest BMW center immediately...". Even the remote key control isn't working. It was a terrible and frustrating experience. Anyway, we broght the car to a local dealer in LA. Eventually after 5 days, the LA dealer informed us that the gateway module on the car was defective and they had to replace it as well as many relays attached to it. We had to rent a car for our trip and went to LA again to pick it up after it was repaired.

Has anyone seen this kind of problems before on a BMW and does anyone know what the BMW's policy is for this kind of incident on a very new car like this one (i.e., is it possible to exchange it for another car lease) ? This is my first BMW after 6 Japanese cars including a 2005 Acura MDX, and it really struck me with its built quality on the electonic systems, though I still think its mechanical performance is superb. The electronic on my MDX does not seem to be any simpler than the 525i but it does apprea to be a much more relaible system.

Thanks. -Niles

I don't know whether a module failure can be attributed to build quality. It was likely an outsourced component which suffered an unfortunate failure.

Regardless of the outsourcing parts that failed or not, the BMW car failed me and this was my first car brokedown on the highway in my 14 years of driving experience. And I understand it doesn't happen a lot, perhaps I was just unlucky. Hopefully, this will never happen to any of you. In case this happens, call BMW roadside assitance, and they will help you with towing and up to $750 reimbursement (my expense actually went beyond this numebr) if you are more than 100 miles away from home.

An update on my 2006 525i.

Last weekend, the car had another similar failure after it was fixed last time about 3 weeks ago. This time it was a little different. The warning message cominh out on the screen when we started the car was something like "Dynamic Driving malfunction. Driving not possible. Attend nearest BMW service center". Sounds like serious. So I took the car to the dealer. Fortunately, we were local this time and not on the highway. The car is still in dealer's garage now.

One more time, I will have to call up the lemon law, which in CA, realy needs only 2 times of potential life threatening failures....
