Key initialization not working - car won't start

I had to replace the battery in my key ('97 - old style with batteries) and tried to initialize it. I followed the steps in the user manual to the letter:

1. get in car and close driver door (all doors were closed)

2. put key in ignition and turn to position 1 briefly (less than 5 sec.) then back to position 0 and remove.

3. hold down unlock button and quickly press lock button 3 times (within 10 seconds)

4. key LED will flash slowly for 10 seconds (it did)

5. central locking will automatically lock and unlock car to confirm process worked (it did)

I only have the one key (other was destroyed in a swimming accident and haven't had it replaced yet).

So when I put the key back in to try and start the car, the engine just clicks and all the lights on the dash flash, as though the initialization process did not work.

As far as the doors go, the key works fine. Remote lock, unlock and trunk all work. Just can't get the car started.

Since it appears from steps 4 and 5 that the process worked, I'm wondering could it be anything else? Like a blown fuse? Or too many unsuccessful attempts? Is there anything else that I could try to reset?

Thank you for your help.

What you describe is a classic symptom of a dying car battery or a bad connection at the battery cables. Check for loose/corroded battery cables clamps and posts. If that's not it, have the battery tested at any major auto parts chain store - if you can get it to one (be careful of battery acid).

And yes, this can happen without any prior warning or starting problems.

Really??!!

I thought all along it was some kind of screw up with the key initializing.

It seems almost too much of a coincidence for me, but I will see if I can jump it.

You really don't think this has anything to do with the car's anti-theft system? Some other observations:
  • radio plays
  • lights on dash flash
  • airconditioning works
  • headlamps flash
  • power windows work
  • power brakes not working
  • when I try to start I get a clank...clank...clank...clank...
I appreciate your wisdom, time, and help.

Power brakes don't work without engine running. They run on vacuum.

A jump start is the easiest thing to do to check this out.

I'm going out on a limb here, but I don't think it would even try to crank if it didn't recognize the key.

FYI, it takes a lot more current to start the car than it does to run any of the electrical equipment you mentioned. Although I'd suspect that the power windows run a little slower than usual right now...

Good luck.

I have never really found that jumping works well on BMWs for some reason. I end up having to put a charger on it for a few hours to get it to start.

And yes, alll the little stuff can run, but it not have enough to crank.
