Minor body work voids warranty?
I recently purchased a new 2006 530i. Last week, somebody backed into me and dented my rear quarter panel. The only "authorized" BMW repair shop wants me to leave my brand new car with them for "at least" three months for repair. While that alone is ridiculous, the dealer has informed me that if I let another "unauthorized" body shop repair the damage, my car will be "black listed" and my warranty would be void. Does anyone else find this as crazy as I do? And has anybody had any similar experiences that they would like to share?

The E60 makes extensive use of aluminum in the front and rear end of the car, and if this is not repaired properly, you will have lots of problems. There are a lot of procedures and training involved on properly handling and repairing aluminum. I don't know why you need to leave your car at the shop for 3 months, it should be drivable if the only damage is to your quarter panel.

And are you telling me that "immigrant" working at the "authorized" repair center has any better training than the "immigrant" at the independent repair center that "specializes" in BMW work? I find that hard to believe.
And maybe I've been confused, but what does fixing rear quarter panel have to do with the fact that the car has aluminum rather than another metal?

Standard welds do not work when joining aluminum and steel, due to the danger of corrosion. Also, I made no comment about "immigrant" workers at a repair shop, so I am not sure what you are saying I am telling you. At the end of the day, authorized repair centers are authorized for a reason- BMW has certified their ability to repair your car, and it is the only way BMW will be sure your car has been repaired to an OEM state.
