The New 5 is growing on me....

Hello all...

I am a relatively new to the board and I am continually impressed with the quality of posts here regarding these cars. Some of you were kind enough to pm me with direction and guidance on certail models and I thank you for that.
In my quest for a new car (330cic comming off lease) I have gone from looking at a used 2003 530 to a new E90 to now the new 5 series. Bottom line for me is the 5 is the perfect size for me...the egress compared to a 3 series is just more comfortable to me. I really enjoy driving my wifes 325xit...but getting in and out at times is a little tight. I guess it's time to start that diet/workout program I've been thinking about.
Seriously though....over the past couple of weeks it's like a lightbulb went off in my head...what I once found to be an unattractive car, the new 5 is really growing on me. Maybe I'm talking myself into it but it is starting to look pretty damn good. The only drawback (in looks IMO) is the standard 17" rims that come with the car. I want the sport package, but don't want run flats..I have them on my 330cic and I have had a couple of bad experiences with them. The lease programs are great right now and I can have the car built and ready for delivery around the time my lease ends. Here is what I am looking at: I will be driving them this week.

525 or 530
Premium Package
Premium Sound
Sirius Radio
Comf Access
Comf Seats- ( are they worth it?)
Step
Heated Seats
PDC
Manoco Blue/Auburn or Black/Auburn

Questions:

1) Anyone with a 525 please chime in and give me your feedback on your car- accelleration, Driveability etc.. I hear it's OK with the new engine based on my recent searches.

2) Comfort Seats- Haven't seen a new 5 with one, but if they are anything like the comf seats in a "7" I sat in last year, they have to be great.

3) Not thinking of getting nav as I just won't use it much (except maybe for a summer trip or two upsate)- Am I giving anything up with regards to the Sirius Radio display etc..

Thank you all for any feedback-

Pete[

I think you made the right choice, I think the 5 is a great looking, driving, and performing car. Regarding your questions:

1. An '06 525 will be fairly close to an '05 530, but the '06 has a shade less torque.

2. Comfort Seats are amazing, worth the money, and once you sit in them you won't be able to sit in a any other car

3. The only thing you give up by not getting NAV (other than the nav, obviously) is voice control. I enjoy having both but they aren't completely necessary.

Good luck!

Hi! I actually think that the 530i with the 255 hp I6 engine is a tad underpowered as it is - it could do with about 20-30 more hp and more torque - that's just my opinion, of course. Nevertheless, I'd recommend that you test drive both the 525i and 530i quite extensively (especially on the highway) before making your final decision. You might find that the 525i is too sedate for your commute. But, as I said, it's just my 0.02 cents worth.

Hope this helps and that you enjoy your new car whichever you settle on in the end!

Cheers,
suntan

Suntan....

I drove them both today...530 first, then the 525. I could feel the difference as soon as I stepped on the gas. The 525 would be fun to drive but I would constantly be in Manual mode trying to keep the engine in the power band.....Nice car but the 530 suits me better, especially comming from my 330....
Thanks- Pete

Hi, Pete! I'm glad you found the car for you! You'd be glad to know that the 530i is really a first rate, solidly built car. Also, it gets better and better as you drive it more (the car just seems to "find itself" - weird, I know!). My experience with it so far has been just great.

You are absolutely correct in going with Premium Sound (I so regret not getting that option). Perhaps you would also like to consider getting Rear Fold-Down seats? That's the other option I really regret not getting. Rear Fold-Downs really increase the trunk space of the car (which currently, isn't all that impressive) - but, if you also own some other vehicle which you could use for transporting stuff then this may not be so important to you.

Regarding Nav, I found Nav on my car to be *really* useful. I'm very dependent on it these days, actually. One reason for this is that the Boston area is thoroughly confusing. All I need to do now is key in the address (for restaurants, people's places, other destinations, etc), and the Nav guides me there. And, if I make a wrong turn, the Nav recomputes really quickly and I remain on-track (I don't have to go mess with paper maps). Also, I found the Voice Command that comes with the Nav to be extremely useful. I hate taking my hands off the wheel to mess with going through menus via the Idrive when I'm driving. With Voice Command, I don't have to. And, you get to what you want directly without having to trot through the entire hierarchy of menus. I can change radio stations, dial numbers, work the Nav, etc, effortlessly. Just something to consider, I suppose.

In any case, you're going to love your car!

Best wishes,
suntan

I've had my 05 530i 6spd since March 05 and I like a bit more everyday. The handling is superv. I could always use more power but the manual transmission helps that a bit. Test driving it would really give you a brief glimpse and you'll forget the difference in power between the two engines. I recommend borrowing one from a friend if possible for a whole day and you'll get a true feel for it.
