 lexus GS300awd vs 530 xi

i know i know this is a bmw board so i am well aware of what the bias is. my brother signed on the dotted line today for a black lexus gs300 awd (he lives outside of boston). he had looked at a 525xi. he got like 10% off msrp which a pretty good deal really. any thoughts on the lexus? anyone driven it, ir considered at as a viable bmw alternative?

I actually was going to buy the GS300 AWD - test drove it a couple of times. I liked it, especially in the Champagne color, but it just seemed to be missing something. The wheel seemed small, the seating was tough to get used to, and the dash really just didn't do anything for me – the dark plastic just didn’t fit well with the price. The pricing was good, however, just like you said (I live right outside Boston as well – pricing is really good on the Lexus right now), and they were willing to give me decent money for a trade on my current '03 E320.

After test driving the Lexus, and the E350 too, I then drove the 525xi and the 530xi - completely different look and feel - felt much more solid than the GS300. I actually bought the 530xi today, pretty much fully loaded. For me, it was a clear choice to go with the BMW over the Lexus, even though it cost me several thousand more (list on the GS300 was around $54,000 vs. $59,000 for the 530xi). But again, the GS300 is a great car, really can’t go wrong with it!

I take a peak at the Lexus' from time to time. Love the interiors but can never seem to get past the exteriors. Designs tend the be more conservative. However, great vehicles. Can't go wrong if they are your cup of tea.

They are all such great cars these days. While we're at it we really can't forget about the E350 or the M35. I drove them all before making my decision.

Having come from two M3s my number one priority was sport in my "family" sport sedan. I drove the GS300 once, the M35 once, the E350 twice and the 530i. I bought the 530i without a second of hesitation. I felt the GS was a very comfortable and quiet car with a nice interior but bland exterior. The M35 was much more sporting and more to my liking but it lacked the feel of the BMW and somehow felt cheap compared to the Lexus and the Germans. The E350 looks great - timeless style IMO - but it lacked the driving excitement of the E60. In my opinion the E60 has far superior steering feel and handling compared to its competitors, though the M is getting closer.

All are great cars- it just depends on what part of the drive is most important to you...
