Quick observation on the roads of northern NJ today......

This morning, while driving on route 208/northern NJ/ in the middle of the snow storm saw 2 BMW/545-new version and 540 older version/ completely stuck in the snow. They were on sideways, with rear end spinning.... I have to admit it was quite patetic, meanwhile my
X-3 3.0 was doing just fine. I used to own X-5 3.0 /2003-2005/ and find that awd system on 2005 X-3 is much better. Is this just my observation or you guys alredy experienced this phenomena?

I just purchased a 2003 530i and the first thing I did was purchase four Blizzack WS-50 snow tires on rims for the winter. Today on Long Island, I went out and tried to get stuck by stopping on icy, slick hills, then starting up. I didn't have any problems at all. My E39 with DSC seems to do much better than some of my older cars which don't/didn't have any traction control or limited slip differentials.

My wife with her 1998 528i with only WS-50 snow tires on the rears didn't have any problems the last few winters, even during the blizzards we had.

My suspicion is that the vehicles you saw were trying to get by on their high performance summer treads or their "all-season" tires.

Steve
