I was at local dealership on Saturday and wanted to see the 545i they had in inventory on their website. As I got there, client advisor told me that car was sold night before and manager would be more than happy to go and find me a preowned 545i according to my specs but I had to leave refudable $500 deposit. They have told me that if I am not happy with the deal or price, I can get it back, so I went for it.
Is this usual for pre-owned manager to go and locate the car for you? I've never heard it before but it sounded like a good idea? He told me that he did it many times before.
Your feedback is appreciated.

That's very strange that he would ask you for a deposit. My dealer does locators for me all the time without leaving a deposit at all.

I'm in NY. If you want a referral to a dealership from which we've gotten 10 BMWs, send me a PM.

I think this is very unusual. I guess they wanted to check whether you are serious or not.
BTW, there are tons of people (brokers) who now go to BMW auctions and get you a car $1000 over their cost. Search craigslist etc.. However they can not offer the same services like CPO etc. which a franchise dealer can offer. If you want those services, get your dealer to find you a car. If you are willing to scrap it out with a broker, the auction route might be better.

Getting a broker to go to BMW auction for $1k over their cost in not a bad idea, but I have a car that I'd need to trade in.

I dont think it unusual for them to try and find you one. I do find it disconcerting that they would ask you to leave them $500.
I would never have left them $$ for trying to find a car, especially a used one.
