 Another sirius lie?

I just spoke with the SA at Valencia BMW to inquire about the cost of installing sirius sat. radio. I have a 2004 525i that has sat. prep. From what I have read on this and other forums, I understood that sat. prep meant that the antenna was already in the fin and the the wiring harness was already in place. The SA told me that even with sat prep, it is a 3hr install, and that wires have to be run from the front of the car to the back with an antenna being intalled, usually on the trunk, and a new software upgrade. Does this sound like a lot of BS? I am hoping it is, as I hate the thought of a technician taking things apart to run wires around. I know the software upgrade is needed, but I thought the installation was just plugging the module in at the trunk location and installing the bracket that comes with it.

Thanks for any info you guys can give me on this.

I inquired about this at a couple dealers and in the Audio forum and found that sat prep means it's plug and play and that the antenna IS in the shark fin. Your car does have to visit the dealer for a reprogram to recognize the sat radio though. I have an '06 so I guess it's possible it may be different for an '04.... Anyone?

Thank. I'll try a couple more dealers until I can find one that really knows what is going on.

No, it is the same for 2004s as well. all the wiring is in place when you have the Sat Prep. The dealer simply needs to plug in the module in the trunk and update the programming so that iDrive will recognize the Sirius. My install took 1.5 hours. 3 hrs seems excessive though some dealers have had trouble with the software update, therefore taking longer to do.

Can you pick any Sirius model or BMW supports only specific ones? I have 06 530xi which has all prep done.

thanks

Unfortunately there is a unit made specifically for BMW that goes in the trunk and is operated through the iDrive. You are forced to use that unit if you want the iDrive integration. Otherwise your choices are the FM modulator or the Aux Input in the glovebox to connect either XM or Sirius.
