 Sale of preowned BMW

I would like to sell my BMW X3 myself instead of trading it in. Has anybody experience in selling a car as for sale by owner. Had very little serious response from postings on autotrader and ebay.

Selling a used car is a great way to save quite a few dollars but then I have to believe that you already know that. I believe that I am well over $5,000 ahead of what dealers would have given me for the used cars that I sold this year.

I am also in the Washington, D.C. area so you can do what I did.

Each time I get a new car I wait until I have it in the garage and then I sell the old car myself. This year I have sold 3 used cars. I sold my '93 525iT to a buyer in Columbia, MD who saw my classified ad in the Washington Post. It took 6 months before I found someone who was interested in my touring and was willing to pay a fair price. I also sold my daughter's '94 Honda to a local buyer in one week using a Washington Post classified ad. I took $200 less than my asking price which was what I expected to have happen. Finally, I sold my "brand new" 2001 Z3 with only 1,000 miles on the odometer to another buyer in Maryland by using the roadfly.org classified ads. It took 4 months but again I only had to lower my asking price by $400 to make the sale. I used the roadfly.org website rather than the Washington Post as it is very cheap and I felt that the buyer I was looking for would be watching the roadfly ads.

It might well take you several months to find a buyer for your X3 but I would suggest that the Washington Post and roadfly.org would be a good place to start. Remember that you have a specialized vehicle and that not everyone is looking for a slightly used X3. Remember also that it only takes one buyer to solve your problem. A fair selling price is the best way to sell your X3. If you are trying to get a high price it won't work.

Hope this helps.

I hope you are correct. I sold my E320 to my son and shiiped it to him in CA. My wife and I are sharing her C280. We have ED pickup of our new 530xi & 330i on 9/15. As soon as they arrive I am going to try and sell the C280. Shouldn't be hard it is a 2000 with 28k on the odometer and 2+ years left on the MB 8 year 100k warranty.

I have never tried to sell myself before, but it seems like a fine idea!

I've had a lot of luck with Autotrader.com. I've sold a '66 Mustang Vert, '95 Mustang GT, '00 Mustang GT, and '97 528i through Autotrader. All of the cars had high mileage, but were in pretty good to excellent shape. Just be patient, some times it takes up to three to five months to get a serious buyer- but it's definetely worth the extra cash.
