Hi BMW fans: Will I get European (rectangular) plates when I do my first ED in January 2006 on my new 550? Do I have to return them?
Also, can I put German plates on my BMW when I return to the States. Not in the back, but in the front.
Where can I buy German plates...? It would be nice to keep them
I live in California and have no problem using CA plates for the back, but wanted something different for the front.
Thanks

IMO, and others may disagree, but retaining ED plates once your car is redelivered and registed in the US is faux. It's like saying, "hey, my car is more EU than yours." Those of us who've done ED before, instantly recognize ED plates as distinguished from real EU plates, which are quite different.
As to CA matters, you will likely get a parking ticket at some point anyway.
Why not just throw them away, or keep them as a souvenier.

They are smaller (somewhat) than the standard EU plates. You can keep them. We all do. In fact, when you drop off the car, you should take the front plate with you. If you are doing european delivery in January, I hope you are not ordering a car with summer (sport) tires. That will present a problem as Gerling will not cover you if anything happens due to having non snow tires on the car.

I would just go to a licence plate shop in Germany while you're doing the ED and get your personalized plate "TMS 550", for example, if you like. The plate will only cost about 25 Euro and you can put it on the front when you get the car back in the USA. Have a great time on your ED and if you like beer don't forget to vist all the "Bier Keller" in München.

It has always been possible for them to do that if you drove with summer tires on snow and ice; the new law just makes proving that easier. How much easier, I don't think anyone yet knows, and probably won't know until the new rules come into effect and are tested in court.
