 550 SMG vs. Auto/Step

I have ordered my new 550 with auto/steptronik. I did not want the Manual as I will use this for work and want an auto.

I am unfamililar with SMG. IS it worth it..? I just want an easy plaeasnt drive everyday.

I liked my 2000 540 with auto. I am leaning towards auto. I am concerned that the SMG will be to involved and make driving more of an effort.

My other car is a 911 Turbo manual and thats effort but fun.

Any thoughts...

With a 911, get the auto, you will have the best of both worlds.

Steptronic is an auto with a manual mode. SMG is a manual with an auto mode. I test drove a SMG M3 and SMG 550i, I gotta say the shifts on the 550i are a little harsher.

I have the SMG on my 530. The auto mode is a little more rough, simular to manual shifting. However, it is more fun to use steering wheel pedal to down shift into turns or on highway. IMO if you can get a good deal on the SMG, it is worth it. It is the best of both worlds....especially in sport mode.

SMG ALL THE WAY. If you dont feel like shifting put it in auto/sport mode, that will make it shift smoother. I have had it for three weeks now, and would never buy it any other way

i would not get the bmw SMG until they switch over the borgwarner system. AUDI uses that system in their DSG transmition. my wifes audi 3.2 TT w DSG shifts smother than any auto transmition i have ever driven. get the auto and save the gas gusler tax as well as getting better mpg.
