I have an '06 530i with 6,500 miles on it and just recently started noticing a rattling noise coming from the engine at acceleration (both when the car is cold and warmed up). The noise only occurs at very low RPM's, specifically 1.5 then goes away at approx 2. Took it into the dealer and they said it needed a software upgrade. I upgraded the software and it still rattles. Does anyone know what this could be? The noise is very annoying. Thanks for your help!

Rattles are annoying, I'd keep pestering the dealer until they are properly dealt with.

Using fuel with too low of an octane rating can cause "pinging" at low RPM and also when the engine is under load, and it sounds like a rattling noise in the engine. I know that BMW engines compensate for low octane up to a point, but if you've recently used "off-brand" or octane lower than 91, I'd consider it a possibility.

Thanks-I always use high octane and normally fill up at a Shell station, which is one of the "approved" gas stations. I did fill up at an off brand recently which is when the rattling/buzzing noise started at low RPM. If that was the problem, shouldn't this nosie have gone away after that tank of gas was used up? That was a couple fill ups ago.
The dealer has been very accomodating and wants me to bring it back, it's just a hassle and time consuming. If it's only the gas I will not bother bringing it in.

If you've completely run a couple of tankfuls through, I would think things should be back to normal unless the gas was really really bad. I'd probably keep filling the tank with Shell as soon as it gets down 1/8 or so. If you wind up taking it in, let your dealer know about the gas.

My '05 545 developed a slight clatter noise after about 10,000 miles. Happens when accellerating, hot and cold. I only use top tier premium fuel. First trip to the dealer, they said they couldn't hear anything, neither could the BMW factory rep who was there. On second trip, the mechanic heard it. He said the clatter ended when he disconnected one of the valvetronic motors. The dealer reported it to BMW who have asked them to remove the valve covers and inspect the heads, etc. They're going to do this when I take the car back for another problem for which they had to order a part. I know that you have the six cylinder, but the problem sound's familiar.
