To give proper credit this is from the E60forums:
On the E60/E61 and the E90/E91 with strat engine button you can start the car without the key!
BMW doesn't know how this could happen, but there is a software problem.
When you pull the key out, the settings are getting stored. This process lasts for 20-30 seconds. In this period you can start the car as if the key would be in. The key doesn't even need to be anywhere near the car...
This info is from another forum and got verified by different members there, aslo E90 drivers.
Just make sure that you don't let the car open when you jump out just for a second... Allways lock it, or someone who knows about can jump in and drive off...

Once you open the door, the car is immobilized.. at least my e90 is. The rest of this is true though. You can start it without the key.

RFID Security Issues
There are a number of reports saying that this system is not secure and can be hacked by someone sophisticated. Howver I do not see that as a major issue since professional car thieves do not have a problem in snatching car with traditional keys.
The problem you the OP mentioned is definitely a software issue. The more I read about them, the less I trust BMWs software based systems.

Once you open the door, the ability to start the car is disabled. I just went out and re-verified this. The cahnces of somebody taking your car is virtually nil, unless you climbed out a window.
I like this feature and have used it at driving events.

Yeah, but that was your E90, right? I haven't picked my E60 up yet, so any of you that have one with the start/stop button want to try it out and let us know?
