"Choking" at Start up when cold?

Just curious about this one.............

This is my 3rd bimmer (1st V8) and I've always used Premium fuel.

I'm noticing now that the weather is colder...when I start the car in the morning.. it's really rough... sort of chokes at the beginning. Both my gf and her son have noticed it. It doesn't last very long (only seconds)... just at startup.

I mentioned it to my service advisor and he said that they have been hearing of this more often lately. He attributes it to a bad grade of premium fuel across the board. He says he has heard that "others" having this issue have found the matter to go away after changing to medium grade fuel.

Hmmm. Sounds a little weird to me. Although high octane fuel is harder to burn (and theoretically harder to start in cold weather), and mid-grade fuel would be easier to burn, I can't imagine switching to a lower grade will help until the weather gets really cold. Do you buy your gasoline from a Top Tier company?

I have noticed that there are occasions when my car runs a little rough for the first few seconds and then seems to warm up, but I attribute it to the fact that the car doesn't get driven all that often.

Since purchasing my 545...... I've only used Chevron! I may try another respectable supplier next time.... before going down a grade.

I really noticed this choking/stumbling thing (at startup) more recently as I'm driving a G35 rental and it starts aggressively and is raring to go just as my 528 and 328 were.

This choking/stumbling thing only happens in the morning and only for a second or 2. It sounds like a cloud of smoke should come from the tail pipe.
