been driving thorugh some very slick piles of wet leaves here in portland, oregon and the x-drive engages seemlessly. very nice option to have when the road is slick. i imagine this baby is awesome in the snow. i did speak to a dealer in vermont who told me that by far the best snow tires are a brand i had never heard of called nokean. i wont need those but that x-drive is very handy in any kind of slick road conditions.

When I had the X3, I was really impressed with the x-drive in the snow and on ice. More than once, I intentionally tried to slide it by overcooking a turn in an ice/snow covered parking lot and it really wouldn't let me, although by being stupid, you can surely overdo it. The E61 with a wider track and longer wheelbase should be even better. X-drive was a prerequisite for any new BMW I bought so I was overjoyed when I found out it would be offered on the 5-series wagon. I think we made a good choice.

I forgot to let you know that I asked my Service Manager about your mileage problem and he told me he hasn't had an E60 (or E61) customer really complain much about it. He did say that the newest software (19.02) which is NOT required, will retard the ignition timing a bit, thus increasing mileage somewhat. I elected to take a pass on the software upgrade at this time since there are no current problems/issues that it fixes. I like the performance the way it is and really don't want it to flatten out at all.

In US it's called Nokian or Hakkapaliitta. Had a set on my E39 for 4 years--they were fantastic. Unfortunately, I haven't been able to find anyone who imports 225/50R17 for an E60. If anyone reading this knows where I can find a set let me know.

I came within a whisker of purchasing a new ML500. After being loyal to Mercedes for 24 years, and reading about similiar quality control problems with the new ML as I had on my 2001 S500... I changed my mind. Electrical glitches plaqued my S-Class for 5 years. Same with my wife's current E320 wagon. Benzworld forums confirm a continuation. I'm with you, they SHOULD have it together by then -- and it's an awesome vehicle to drive. But, my first BMW (2006 530xi Sport Wagon) may be the beginning of a new loyalty for me.
