0 to 60, 550i or IS350?
Is it true that the IS350 is faster than the 550i? Not comparing any other characteristics, just straight line speed. I see advertising for the IS of 5.1. The website claims 5.3 secs. That's fast, with one review I read stating "that's old M3 territory".

The LEXUS IS line competes with the BMW 3 Series. Why do you people continue to compare apples to oranges. Okay, you are just asking but if you done any reading you would know that the entry level luxury vehicles typically weigh less and have smaller engines overall.
To answer you question directly. The LEXUS IS350 is rated at 300hp and the BMW 550i is rated at 360hp. You are a smart person, do the math; e.g. weight, length, etc...
Remember the class matters, this is why we have them.

Definitely the IS is in the 3-series class. I was not comparing the two models. Strictly straight line speed. (And the other thread got me thinking about this car.) However, when a new IS350 pulls up beside me in my new 550i, I'm interested to know who is faster off the line (without a stupid ego-driven street race that I'm too old for now). I know that my G35coupe pulls away from my buddy's 330Ci, but I think a IS350 would take me.
Interestingly, perhaps through smart marketing from BMW a 550 is faster than a 330 (yes, bigger engine but 400lbs heavier). However, Lexus has setup the IS350 to be faster than the GS430 (5.7sec). Perhaps not very smart marketing??

Well, not to belabor Gman's point, but the 550i:330i and IS350:GS430 are very different cars to compare. They have been marketed that way for a reason.
If you want something to rip off the line, pick up a mustang and supercharge it (it'll be cheaper than any of the cars above bone stock) and you'll do well. Starting to see our point?

another thing is that if actually drive the lexus, take it through some turns and watch the dsc kick in immediately just like the gs.. you can't shut it off!
not really having a driver's feel in steering as well -
you really should be posting in japonics forum and put it up against the same class of cars -
350 Z, evo, supra, nsx, s2000, honda, supercharged scion or some other site.

I think my 525iT with an afterburning GE J79 turbojet strapped to the roof is faster than either car.
