Buying a car out of state

I am most likely going to buy a car (private party) out of state. I am going to pay for the car, get the title, then register it in my state and then drive it home. Is there anything I have to look out for or should the transfer go smooth?

The only problem you have will be the Tax Man waiting for you with outstretched hands at the DMV when you go to get your car registered!

Well you either pay now or pay later. Witha private party sale, you pretty much always pay the tax man upon registration. I fyou buy form a dealer, they charge you the tax.

Can I drive the car home with no plates with the title signed over? Or do I have to pay for it....get the title....go home and register it and then drive back out of state to drive it home with a valid reg......

No.. You need to have plates on the car. Here in Fl, I go to the DMV, pay five dollars and give them the VIN and walk out with a 30 day temp tag. With that I can drive the new car back and drive it around for 30 days before having to register it and pay taxes. Usually the title, bill of sale and plates are all that are needed.
