 530 xi t poor mileage

well, just took my 06 530 xi t for a highway jaunt--all seemed normal at 28 mpg. it is around town that has me a bit confounded. the mileage simply sucks. could it be the way i drive? i do tend to ride the brakes a bit, i have noticed. i will give it a try and make a concious effort to be either on the gas or nothing or only brake when i have to stop..i hoe it improves. tire pressure is well within normal at 38 in the rear and 34 in front. bmw recommeds 38 in rear and 30 infront..no fault codes last time the car was in. i did have my oil and filter changed when the car came back from europe at 2428 miles. now i have 4550 miles. i love the car otherwise.

Just a question, are you computing the mileage yourself or looking at the on board computer (OBC)? OBC has been off quite a bit for many folks.

computing myself (the old fashioned way)

Could you give some detail on your city driving? Stuff like average distance for each trip, how many lights, how much traffic (average speed during the trip), maximum speed, weather and temperature, how "aggressive" you drive, etc. I wouldn't be surprised that you're getting what you can reasonably expect. One person's "city" commute is another's "suburban" commute. My wife does 2 7-miles drives a day, in moderate traffic, with up to a dozen lights and a dozen stop signs, a maximum speed of 45 mph and that only for a mile or so, all from a cold start. Throw in errands under similar conditions and it's no mystery why she gets 14 mpg in a 330Ci. A four-cylinder would probably do better but all that stop-and-go is going to hurt mileage on a 6- or 8-cylinder.

well, i do drive cold .5 miles to a morning meditation and yoga class first thing. then, after 2 hours, drive home another.5 miles. my office is 1.6 miles from my house. i do step on it sometimes and then have to slow down and brake. i am by no means a maniac. i do tend to get impatient when i am in my neighborhood and am ina rush to get home. lots of stop signs. occasionaly i drive downtown about 3-4 miles away and am able to go a bit faster. freeway driving is there but it is not like i am commuting 35 miles per day or anything. tempartures have changed since sept ie cooler low 50's now. any further advice or thoughts would be appreciated. i thought this 530 x it was going to be a gas mileage improvement over my 1998 audi a4 quattro. so far, this has not occurred.

From what you describe I would expect crappy mileage. The engine is not even fulling warming up (and therefore is running somewhat rich), there sounds like there's no constant speed cruising of any significance (this type of steady state operation is where you get your best mileage), and there's a lot of complete stops (meaning idling and acceleration where you get zero and fairly bad mileage).

Many people assume they will get the EPA City rating but that figure is based on an "idealized" driving cycle that while urban in manner is not nearly as "bad" for mileage as what you describe. I doubt there's anything wrong with you car and I'd bet that even if you modified your driving style you wouldn't see any real difference. Short of getting a hybrid... Your A4 was a 4-cylinder probably?
