Oil, what? when?
I have a 2005 530i. The dealer tells me only to change the oil when the on-board system tells me too, this can be up to 10,000+ miles. Is this good advice? I don't want to change to oil if it is not necessary, but really, 10,000 miles!?
Also, when the oil runs low, what kind should I put in? Synthetic? 10W30? Any special brand(s)?
Thanks
| | Reply » Oil, what? when? | I like to do it around 7500 miles myself: oil and filter. Read your manual...it tells you what BMW recommends. Personally, I use Mobil 1 5w-30 Synthetic in my 2001 530i but BMWs oil is fine, too, and amazingly enough, a pretty good deal at the dealer.

Thanks | It can be 15,000+, depending on how you drive. It's been debated numerous times here. If you do a search, you'll be shocked at how many posts it has triggered.
Some say there's no problem. Others do it every 5,000 or 7,500 miles as a precaution. It depends largely on how long you will keep the car. Want to drive it into the ground, then do the extra maintenance. Passing it along in 4 years... well you know the answer there.
How can it be so long between changes? Synthetic oil, lots of it, and a huge filter to keep it clean.
