BMWNA - I'm officially worried now....

As some of you may know my Logic 7 stereo sometimes refuses to turn on. I’ll start the car in the morning and it will work fine on my way to work. It will sit all day and will work fine on my way home. But, if on my way home from work I make a 10 minute stop at the store often times when I return to the car the stereo refuses to come on. I’ll get home and then about 30mins later I’ll go out to the car and it will turn on again. When the stereo is inoperable it also renders the Bluetooth worthless since nothing comes out of the speakers.

My brother-in-law has a 2002 745LI and among all the problems he’s had with the car (there have been MANY) this intermittent stereo thing is the only problem the dealer absolutely cannot fix. Don’t ask why he hasn’t enforced the lemon law because I don’t have the answer to that. This leads me to believe that it’s not a stereo problem but rather a gremlin in the electronics – read iDrive – that will be next to impossible to find. If my car has to go to the dealer 4 times for this problem with no luck I won’t hesitate to go lemon law it but I’d rather not hassle with that. So back to the shop this week for the second time in three weeks…

Has anyone else experienced this problem?

Sorry, I haven't experienced this problem- my Logic7 has always turned on an off at will. The problem with all the systems in the car is that they are integrated with iDrive, so a stereo problem is an iDrive problem. I would imagine that they will need to replace the CCC or MASK (those are the computers in NAV and Non-NAV cars) to resolve the issue, but I would imagine they will try a software upgrade first. You never know, it could be something as simple as a problem with the on/off/volume knob!

The only weird thing I've ever experienced with my L7 stereo is with 2 specific songs, there is a single speaker that makes a funny noise, almost like it is blown out or has a loose wire. No other song tracks cause this to occur, no matter how loud I have the stereo. Just plane weird.

Not knowing the whole story I am going to assume a few things.

When you say the Logic 7 turns off, do you mean there is just loss of audio? Or does hte menu on i-Drive break as well.

If you are losing audio, I suspect there is a short in the wiring going to/from the amp.

If this is a E60, here's what I would do. Call BMW NA, and get a hold of the rep for your area. Explain the issue, explain the dealer has not adequately fixed the issue, and need BMW engineering to get involved.

a lot of times you end up with a service tech that is inexperienced in dealing with electrical problems other than what the factory tells him for common issues.

As much as the car costs, I would insist BMW NA link you up with a sharp tech. Your rep will know where the good ones are. My friend has a Mercedes with a short in the wiring that they could not find. After several months, and a lemon law threat, MB sent an engineer to the dealership, problem was fixed in a hour. Tech at the dealship was fired not because he could not fix it, but because he did not escalate for help.

I don't mind have issues fixed, I do mind repeated trips to dealership due to incompetence.

Let you dealer know this is unacceptable and unless BMW NA is involved, you can complain about the dealership.

Reality is, squeaky wheel gets the oil.

iDrive remains functional. I can carry out all the normal functions on iDrive including changing radio stations but no sound comes from the speakers. When I turn the radio on/off the speaker icon with a line through it also appears when off and disappears when turned on. So it's definitely a short somewhere.

I just had CIP 19.01 installed on my car which involved a full system upload that took in the neighborhood of 9 hours to do according to the dealer. They thought the new software would cure the stereo problem but unfortunately the day after I picked the car up the stereo went out again.

Do you have the best BMWNA phone number to call? I will give my dealer one more shot but if they can't get it right I will get BMWNA involved. I also started taking contemporaneous notes in case this goes to lemon law. Thanks for your thoughts.

From BMWUSA web site.

Customer Relations

or you can ask your dealer for the area rep. This will make them nervous, but they should do it.

BTW, since i-drive is working, this is a good sign. I suspect harness cabling to/from amp.

Let me ask you one more thing, when Logic 7 fails, does voice navigation still work?

I would suspect it should not, but you never know how these things are hooked up.
