I was ardently against AS when it first came out, until I drove a recent 530i in which I could barely tell it had it. My question is, has AS been improved entirely through S/W updates? In other words, were those of you who got early E60s able to reap all the improvements in AS as they came along in later cars?

Bob, I've both heard and read that s/w updates did drastically improve AS.

Active Steering has been is no longer part of the Sports package on 06s

Are you sure the car had it? Perhaps you didn't do any turning at lower speeds where AS is doing its work? It is definitely noticeable...so much so that when I drive a car that doesn't have it, I almost miss some slow speed turns. It's a GREAT option in my opinion

I'm not sure what the relevancy is to your statement. AS is now standalone, but so?

When I ordered my 545 back in Dec 2003, I passed on the sports package because of AS. I did not care for the artificial feel of the whole thing, especially at higher speeds. It has supposedly been greatly improved now, though I have not driven one of the newer iterations of AS. It is my understanding that the changes were made with software updates and did not involve any mechanical changes.
