In your I-drive menu do you have the option of controlling the daytime running lights on, or off. Or did the dealer ask you wich you prefer when you picked up the car. Thanks

I know you are asking specifically about the 550i but I bet the same still holds true in what I know about DRLs in my 545i.
In Canada, DRLs are mandatory...they must have them on. Therefore, they get no choice to turn them off or on...they simply don't have access to that feature in I-Drive.
As I understand it, the software is very, very similar (maybe the same?) between the US and Canada. It could even be a North American thing (which, I guess, is Canada and the US ).
So, the US market doesn't get access to the DRL menu either and therefore it requires the dealer to hook up the computer and turn them on via that route.
You will need to ask your dealer to turn them on for you...hopefully they'll do it as a courtesy: they should!
