Motor Trend Comparo: M45 Sport vs 545i non-sport

In the November 2005 issue of Motor Trend, the 2005 545i non-sport trounced the 2006 Infiniti M45 sport in their latest V-8 luxury sedan comparo.
Both cars had automatic transmissions.

To my delight, this is exactly the 545i that I have. It shows that the 545i with the steptronic transmission even without the sport package is one heck of a fine car!
"Nothing pours performance like a Bimmer. A sublime machine."

For those who care, the 2005 MB E500 and 2005 Cadillac STS V8 brought up the rear.
Great job Motor Trend!

My girlfriend was interested in the G35 coupe....... so we took a trip to the Infiniti dealership last weekend.

The M45 has what looks like an I-drive controller mounted high on the dash on sort of a shelf.
The QX56 has some sort of I-drive controller mounted in the center of the dash, but looks sort of like a golf tee stuck into the dash. You have to reach out with your finger tip to maneuver the controls... imagine doing this on a bumpy road.

BMW's I-drive has received a ton of criticism, (I love it BTW) but at least they put it where you can comfortablly rest your arm and access it with taking your eyes off the road.... my TCW.

So much negative hype over what?
I didn't care for the 3-blink lane change, so a few easy clicks with iDrive and I have a normal lane changer.

What I really enjoyed about the Motor Trend comparo is that they concentrated on the PERFORMANCE of the vehicles. No endless whining about the "impossible" iDrive or the "controversial styling."

I never cared much for Motor Trend as a serious auto mag. But lately the quality of their writing and common sense comparos have made me sit up and take notice.
