The service department from BMW told me that the rims on my 2005 530i are specially made for run flat tires. I thought it was only the strengthed side walls on the run flats that made the special difference. Anybody know the truth ?

Run-flat tires do indeed need a special rim. The cool thing about the BMW rims designed for run-flat tires is that they will work with both non-run flats and run-flats.
