 3 vs 5 series

i sat in an 06 330i today. i own an o6 530 xi t. no comparison. close he doors on the 3 and it felt ok, but did not have the solid tank like feel on my car. i sat in the rear (i am only 5 feet 9 inches) and my head felt like it was about to hit the roof. i am sure the 3 series is great in its class but it comes nowhere near the feel of a 5 series. now, granted i did not drive it so i cannot comment. also, i admit the 3 is a lot less money!

different car for people with different needs?

Interestingly I've heard the e90 and e39 are somewhat comparable in terms of size.

You do have to drive it to make a fair comparison. The 330i comes alive when you hit the road. It's also 10k cheaper.

Well, technically, the 3 and 5 are very different animals meant for very different things. The 3 is smaller, lighter, and they're a lot more fun on the road to whip around. The 7 is roomy and cushy but has all the luxury and still maintains a semblance of road feel and power.

The 5 is an excellent compromise to luxury and handling between the two. Hands down, I have found it the best family vacation vehicle out there. When you want the luxury, it delivers...when you want to stretch its legs and heat up the tires, it'll repond, too! Good stuff, good stuff....

You are correct

The E39 5 and the E90 3 are very similar, and almost identical in some dimensions. I spent a few hours in the showroom while my 5 was in for service and I actually measured the interior dimensions of a new E90 to compare to my E39. I took along my trusty 12' stanley tape measure!

E39 Vs. E90

1. The front headroom measured identical at 37" drivers seat at lowest position

2. Front legroom - The E90 has slightly more leg room and much greater seat travel. (drivers seat in comfortable driving position)

3. rear headroom - the E90 is a little tight, about .4" less than the E39

4. rear legroom - the E90 actually has about 1" more rear legroom than the E39 with the drivers seat in the same position as in the front legroom test. The biggest difference though is that in the E39 5 there is more room for your toes under the front seats. The E90 seats sit lower to the floor so you cant put your feets under them as much.

5. rear shoulder room - both measured identical at 57" across just below the windows

Just thought I would share my observations. Subjectively, I dont think there is much difference between the two. The back seat does feel a bit smaller in the 3 but not by much, and the measurements prove it. In the drivers seat of the E90 you feel like you sit up much higher in the car than in the E39. I had to double check that the seat was all the way down.
