Hi folks,
Let me first say I'm a die-hard BMW fan. Always have been. My wife drives an X3 and I have an 02 530i. I'm ready to replace my 530, as I really want an AWD car and SAT/NAV.
My last AWD vehicle was an 01 Audi A6 2.7 which was arguably the worst ownership experience of my life. Not only was the car a mechanical train wreck, but the local dealership was awful. I drive a lot for work, and although my RWD 530 hasn’t really let me down in rain and snow, I still like the idea of AWD... After making the emotional decision to plop down between 45-55K for a new car, I set about creating my short list. The BMW was a natural, as I've always loved them. I found the Lexus AWD and Infiniti unappealing and have never liked Mercedes. Then, along comes this RL... It's pretty amazing, loaded, drives great and it's 10K cheaper than a comparable 503xi with SAT/NAV! But, I'm not sure it's quite a BMW in terms of performance and handling. Yes it drives great, but there is something missing. I'm just not sure what’s missing is worth 10 grand...
Is the RL a 5 Series killer?

The RL is not a bimmer beater by any means. Yes it is a nice car but if you are thinking of an AWD and you don't go with the bimmer then the Infiniti is the best way to go. You get everything you could imagine for a great price, it's reliable, its fun and it beats out everything (including the bimmer) in all of the reviews. That is just my advice but I think the RL is very dissapointing (and ugly).

I test drove the RL and seems like a good car.
It's all about personal preference -- if you lease, montly payment will be about the same since RL has a very low residual at 36 months. RL is more luxury and technological advance car, but 530i is all about performance and luxury.

No.
Just like the Acura TL that I bought and hated. Save yourself some grief and money - buy the 5 series.

Hey you're still young, the RL is a great vehicle and best bang for the buck, but it doesn't have that sporty look & prestige that we all yearn for.
When you buy a luxury car, whether you like it or not, there is a part of you that wants the prestige in driving this type of car. The Acura just doesn't have the prestige usually associated with BMW, Lexus or MB. It kind of falls above Honda & Toyota, but still below BMW, Lexus and MB.
