ATTENTION CANADIANS LOOKING TO LEASE A 550i
Here's some info. to consider...
- Residual rates on 550's in Canada are speculated to be 55% or lower (mimicking the entry rates on the 530)
- Residual rates on 550's in the US are speculated to be 60% or higher (mimicking the entry rates on the 530)
- Lease rates in Canada on the 550 are speculated to be 6.90 or higher(mimicking the rate offered on the 330 right now)
- Lease rates in the US are speculated to be 3% or lower (mimicking the rate offered on the 330 and 530 right now)
Cap. costs are also lower just based on currency conversions.
All that said, I'm figuring if you can register the car stateside somehow (as we can, having offices in NY state and living in Ontario) you should be able to save a min. of $14,000 over the course of a 36month lease (I'm even compensating for fluctuations in currency of 8points over the course of 36 months - meaning worse case scenario of the US dollar gaining 8cents over 36 months).

| | Reply » ATTENTION CANADIANS LOOKING TO LEASE A 550i | It's as simple as comparing lease numbers on www.bmw.ca and www.bmwusa.com on a 545i as a guide towards a 550. I'm using 1.25 as a buy rate (which is conservative, given that I can buy bulk at 1.22 right now).
SOMEONE, ANYONE PLEASE TELL ME I'M MISSING SOMETHING?

Well, I made the plunge into to 545....btw I am new to Bimmerfest & first post!
I jumped from my 2002 330i with 57K miles Sport, Premium, Xeons, HK upgrd, 18"'s (got $23K for trade)
This was a Sales Mgr car with 3800 miles
2005 545i Sedan $55,800 Destination Charge $695 Exterior: Silver Gray Metallic Interior: Black Dakota Leather Poplar Grain Wood Trim
Packages Cold Weather Package $750 Premium Sound Package $1,800 Sport Package $3,300
Options: Power Rear Sun Shade/Manual Rear Side Window Shade $575 Satellite Radio $595 STEPTRONIC automatic transmission $0
MSRP $63,515 Sold for $58,515
Thats ~$500 over invoice based upon KBB Invoice...
Trade In - I jumped from my 2002 330i with 57K miles Sport, Premium, Xeons, HK upgrd, 18"'s (Trade=$23K) KBB=$21.6K
So your thoughts on if I did indeed get a good deal???
That converts in CAD$ to just over $73,000. Use a standard lease calculator and plug in a residual of 57% (which is what BMW US is giving) and an intrest rate of 2.75% which is a money factor easily attainable and you'll see a payment once converted to canadian dollars of <$1000/month. CAN I FIND THAT DEAL IN THE GTA???

I am also trying to decide between the 545i and the 550i, and also looking to lease, but the more I read, the more it seems like Canadians get ripped off.
Sorry my bad, Alex. I realize you were just copying another post. So...anything new on your search? I am going to do some shopping tomorrow. I have 2006 550i USD dealer invoice pricing, but I don't have CAD pricing. Do you know where I can find this?

There's not much difference between the 545 and 550, however discounts on the 550, given that it's a new model are not near as good as 545.
Continuing my investigation on leasing a US car as a Canadian, I've found... (1) Insurance is possible (called Statefarm in FLA, and all is good) (2) MTO requires the car to be outside of Canada once every 6 months. Yes, it's as easy as driving over the border once every six months. It's a grey area, but doable. Confirmed with OPP as well. (3) Waiting for a call back from customs to confirm they will not attempt to place duty or GST on the car when I cross over given that a lease is the same as a rental where there is no ownership/equity held in the asset.
